The idea behind the MCS spinlock is that each CPU has its own mcs_node, typically via per-CPU storage. The mcs_nodes form a linked list of waiters: the next pointer of each node points to the next waiter that should be unlocked after this node (if any). In addition, there is no shared locked flag that all CPUs have to contend over. The locked flag is instead located in the per-CPU mcs_node, which means that each waiter spins on its own local flag.
